Need a space to make your show?
Rehearsal space can really eat into your modest Fringe budget. Before opening every single link on this page in a new tab frantically, have a think outside the box, and think about your networks! Would your old school have a meeting room or a gym and would be so proud for you to use it? Or do you (or someone you know) have a connection to a student or alumni at a uni or tafe that would have access to an after-hours free space? Any dance mums in your network you can tap for the key to a studio? Or is just a humble living room (And some forgiving housemates) going to do the job?
After all that, see below the places that offer hired spaces that are private, clean and can provide focused time to be creative. Keeping in mind that rehearsal space is competitive, be reasonable with your time spent “on the floor”, be polite and punctual, and always comply with any venue hire conditions. No liquids means no liquids!
There’s a couple of different types of hired spaces on offer to help you get your show on the road;
Councils and Local Government Areas (LGAs) offer lots of meeting spaces and some even have more theatre-friendly spaces you can really make a ruckus in! This is where being organised is key - most councils have a booking system that does require a fair bit of detail, so get your calendar out, get in early and make sure you’ve got any documentation ready!
These kinds of spaces might be more ad-hoc in their availability, may not have a formal booking system, and will prioritise their own artists and events. Patience and a bit of flexibility is required!
