Qlab

Qlab! What is it? Why is it? And WHEN is it?

Qlab is an industry standard program, and most commonly used in theatre spaces and venues. It’s the Go-To for sound and the latest version Qlab4 also enables lighting cues. It’s created by a company called Figure 53. It is only available on Mac computer systems.

Some Windows using artists in the past have hacked this with a workaround - buying an older mac -macbook, air, anything - and using that as their show-only laptop. This also allows the possibility in the unfortunate event a laptop might get stolen or damaged, that it isn’t your personal laptop that’s out of action!

How do I get it?

How do I use it?

Good question! It can be used in lots of different ways, but Figure 53 have tutorials - in particular, this series on youtube for free. Melbourne Fringe also runs a Qlab 101 workshop each year in the lead up to the festival, so keep your eye on the Bulletins for announcements and RSVPs.

PROS: An industry standard across the board

CONS: not available on windows operating systems.
